Vanity or vital

Each card pairs a headline metric with the vital one it's supposed to reflect — total signups with activation rate, page views with checkout conversion. Some pairs are healthy; in others the headline number climbs while its vital partner quietly falls. Flag the diverging ones, then see your precision and recall. Runs entirely in your browser (0 uploads, works offline).

How to use it

  1. Read each pair's two trend lines — the headline metric and the vital metric beneath it.
  2. Flag the pairs where the headline is rising but the vital is falling (the vanity trap).
  3. Hit Score my read — see how many diverging pairs you caught, which you missed, and why a rising number can hide a falling business.

What this clears up (the fundamentals)

  • A vanity metric goes up without the business getting healthier — signups, views, and followers can all soar while the thing they're meant to drive (activation, conversion, referrals) declines.
  • Always report the pair, not the flattering half — a headline number is only meaningful next to the vital metric it's supposed to move. Reporting one without the other is how leadership gets misled.
  • Divergence is the tell — when a headline and its vital partner move in opposite directions, growth is hollow. That gap is the single most useful thing to watch.
  • Some pairs are genuinely healthy — not every rising metric is vanity. The skill is distinguishing real growth (both move together) from hollow growth (they diverge).

Where it's used

A metrics-literacy drill for PMs, founders, and analysts — the fastest way to feel why "signups are up 40%" needs a second number before anyone celebrates. It's a miatz build-lab concept playable; learn to build it yourself.

FAQ

What makes a metric "vanity"?

Not that it's fake, but that it can rise without the underlying business improving. Total signups is vanity if activation is falling; the count grows while fewer of those users ever get value.

How is my read scored?

By precision and recall against the true set of diverging pairs: recall is how many diverging pairs you caught, precision is how many of your flags were actually diverging (flagging a healthy pair costs precision).

Why pair every headline with a vital metric?

Because a single number can't tell you if growth is real. Pairing signups with activation, or revenue with retention, exposes whether the headline reflects health or hides its decline.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The metric series and your scoring all run in your browser — nothing is transmitted or stored. Turn off your Wi-Fi and it still works.

Limits

A teaching model with clean, monotone trends and obvious pairings — real dashboards are noisier and the right "vital" partner is often contested. Use it to build the pair-the-metric instinct, then apply it to your own funnel.
